A Dramatic and Delightful Family Escape: South Wales Shines for the Richard Burton Centenary

This year, as South Wales proudly celebrates the Richard Burton Centenary, there’s never been a better time to visit the region that inspired so many greats. Known as The Dramatic Heart of Wales, this breathtaking corner of the country more than lives up to its name — with its striking landscape of soaring mountains, cascading waterfalls, and rivers that weave through valleys towards the sea. It’s no wonder that this land produced international stars such as Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins, Michael Sheen, and Katherine Jenkins.

For families looking for adventure, relaxation, and a taste of authentic Wales, this region is unbeatable. The colder months offer a perfect time to visit, offering guided nature and history walks, mountain hikes, river kayaking, mountain biking lessons, lake SUPing, high ropes adventures at Go Ape, horse riding, gorge walking, and enchanting waterfall trails... followed by cosy nights in.  Add in heritage sites, museums, and incredible foodie experiences, and you’ve got something to delight every generation and all for incredible value.

A Home from Home: Bwlch Farm Lodge

We spent our October half term at Bwlch Farm Lodge — and it was nothing short of spectacular. This beautifully converted barn, perched on a quiet working farm in the hills above Port Talbot, is the definition of a rural escape. Overlooking Swansea Bay and framed by the rolling Afan Valley, the views stretch for miles — from sun-drenched mornings to misty, atmospheric afternoons.

The lodge itself is immaculate and effortlessly combines rustic charm with modern comfort. Exposed stone walls, woodblock flooring, and a cosy log burner make the open-plan living space warm and inviting. The kitchen is superbly equipped, and there’s a dining area perfect for family meals and games.

Upstairs, three thoughtfully designed bedrooms offer flexible sleeping arrangements — ideal for families. The master bedroom’s king-sized bed is wonderfully comfortable, while the other rooms can be tailored for kids or extra guests. Every detail has been considered, from the plush bedding to the games and Smart TV. Whether the sun is shining or the rain is tapping gently on the windows, it’s a truly special place to be.
It’s the kind of home you wish you never had to leave.

Fantastic Days Out

Margam Country Park was a highlight of our stay. This historic estate is a treasure trove of beauty and adventure — home to a magnificent castle, sweeping gardens, and endless woodland trails. There’s so much to do here, from Go Ape and go-karting to farm trails, a miniature railway, and an enchanting fairy-tale village. It’s incredible value too, with parking at just £7 for the whole day.

Another must-visit is Aberdulais, a picturesque walk blessed with stunning waterfalls and steeped in industrial heritage. Managed by the National Trust, the site is pristine and welcoming, complete with a café and bookshop. The waterfalls themselves are mesmerising — fed by the River Dulais as it journeys from the Brecon Beacons down to meet the River Neath. Wildlife lovers will adore the local residents too — Daubenton bats, Dippers, Wagtails, and Herons call this area home.

Rainy Day Treats and Retail Therapy

It’s Wales — so yes, you might get a bit of rain! But that’s no problem, because less than 30 minutes away you’ll find McArthur Glen Designer Outlet. With brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Boss, Levi’s, D&G, Oakley, and Hotel Chocolat, it’s a shopper’s paradise. We bagged some fantastic bargains and enjoyed a delicious meal at Wagamama, with plenty more options available including Mowgli for a modern Indian twist.

Where to Eat

We discovered some real gems during our stay.

In Neath, The Welsh Arms was a firm favourite — imagine one of the trendy “Lounges” restaurants, but with a proudly Welsh twist. The menu celebrates local produce, from faggots and gravy to freshly made pizzas and Shepherd’s Pie with Welsh lamb. It’s hearty, honest food in a welcoming setting, with a great children’s menu too.

Another standout was Booths by the Bridge, a family-run café with real community spirit. After an impressive renovation, they reopened in early 2025, serving up Coaltown coffee roasted just down the road in Ammanford, alongside Baked by Jones cakes and milk from Daisy Bank Farm. The space is modern yet homely, with a garden overlooking the aqueduct and Neath River — and it’s dog-friendly!

We couldn’t resist the rich hot chocolates and artisan coffees, and we’ll definitely be back to try their famous baguettes and Disco Dough Neapolitan pizzas.

Final Thoughts

Our family holiday to South Wales was nothing short of magical. Between the dramatic landscapes, rich history, and warm Welsh hospitality, it’s easy to see why this region inspired some of the world’s greatest talent.

Bwlch Farm Lodge provided the perfect base — a peaceful, luxurious retreat surrounded by the beauty of nature yet close to so many exciting activities and attractions.

EVERYBODY we met was friendly and helpful. NOWHERE was overcrowded.  EVERYWHERE was exceptional value for money.  There's so much to do here, we will definitely be returning before too long, and we still dream of cosy nights in that lodge with a nice prosecco and log fire!
