Ted lasso star Phil Dunster joins How To Train yOUR Dragon 2 cast
Ted Lasso star Phil Dunster is flying into the How to Train Your Dragon universe. The Phil Dunster star has signed on to appear in Universal Pictures’ upcoming live-action sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2.
Dunster will play Eret, a swaggering dragon trapper who made his animated debut in the 2014 film as a loud, self-styled legend in his own mind. The role marks a key addition to an already stacked cast that includes Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, Cate Blanchett, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn.
The sequel follows the success of Universal’s 2025 live-action How to Train Your Dragon, which soared to $636 million at the global box office. The franchise is adapted from the bestselling book series by How to Train Your Dragon author Cressida Cowell.
Franchise co-creator Dean DeBlois returns once again to write, direct, and executive produce the film. The story revisits Hiccup (Thames) as he confronts seismic changes to his world, including the shocking reappearance of his long-believed-dead mother and the looming threat of Drago Bludvist, a ruthless figure intent on domination through a dragon army.
Producing duties fall to Marc Platt via Marc Platt Productions, alongside company president Adam Siegel. Universal has penciled in a theatrical release date of June 11, 2027.
Dunster is best known for his Emmy-nominated turn as Jamie Tartt on Apple TV+’s hit series Ted Lasso, which is set to return for its fourth season this summer. Up next, he’ll appear opposite Steve Carell in HBO’s upcoming comedy Rooster, from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.
