⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Truly Magical Triumph – Matilda The Musical at Curve Leicester
Matilda The Musical has returned to UK stages with a triumphant roar — and what a return it is. This dazzling, multi-award-winning show from the Royal Shakespeare Company continues to prove why it’s a global phenomenon, captivating audiences of all ages with its wit, warmth, and wonder.
The cast are nothing short of outstanding. Richard Hurst absolutely steals the show as Miss Trunchbull, the terrifying headmistress who loathes children. He plays her with a perfect blend of venom and humour, his delivery razor-sharp and his physicality exceptional. His killer lines and expert delivery are rewarded throughout with huge laughs, and his choreography is a comedic masterclass — a true show-stealing performance.
Adam Stafford and Rebecca Thornhill are equally sensational as Mr and Mrs Wormwood. Their comic timing is impeccable, and it’s clear they’re having the time of their lives. The pair bring these larger-than-life characters to vivid, hilarious life — their energy is infectious and their scenes are pure joy.
Tessa Kadler was born to play Miss Honey. She gives the role extraordinary depth, avoiding any trace of sentimentality. Instead, she brings real heart and soul, delivering songs that are among the standout moments of the evening. Her vocals are exceptional and deeply moving — she captures the spirit of kindness and quiet courage perfectly.
The children in the cast are astonishing. Dotty Jones (Lavender) is a star in the making — full of charisma and comic flair. Sanna Kurihara shines brilliantly as Matilda, commanding the stage with breathtaking confidence. Her energy, delivery, and movement are off the scale, and her singing is just as impressive. And the entire ensemble of young performers deserves a standing ovation — their choreography, timing, and sheer professionalism are remarkable. It's all off-set by some of the best staging and production you can possibly witness in a theatre. It's so clever, you'll take it for granted.
It’s easy to see why Matilda The Musical, with its book by Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, has won over 100 international awards and delighted more than 12 million people worldwide. The story — a celebration of imagination, intelligence, and courage — feels made for the stage.
As it celebrates 15 magical years since first opening in Stratford-upon-Avon, Matilda The Musical continues to inspire and astonish. It’s an unforgettable theatrical experience that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer.
