Stranger Things: How to listen to the new popup radio station
A brand-new radio station is turning the airwaves upside down from today (Monday 24 November) as Global, the Media & Entertainment group, unveils WSQK ‘The Squawk’, a fully immersive pop-up radio station from the world of Stranger Things 5.
Radio station WSQK ‘The Squawk’ will blast non-stop 1980s hits, and be presented by a line-up of American DJs, including Vance Goodman and Mindy Flare, along with a full run of retro American-style ads straight out of Hawkins.
In-world station features include Rewind at 9: Turning Hawkins Upside Down, where a track played backwards puts fans to the test, and Talk to Tammy, the station’s no-nonsense Agony Aunt keeping Hawkins on the straight and narrow. There’s also Dial-A-Dedication, where fans can get a shout out on air (listeners can register messages via globalplayer.com for those without a landline).
James Rea, Chief Broadcasting and Content Officer at Global, said: “In Stranger Things, Netflix has created one of the most iconic worlds on television, so bringing WSQK ‘The Squawk’ to life has been a joy. Our team have thrown themselves into it, showing real creative flair and a proper love of radio. Netflix has been a brilliant partner throughout and we’re proud to make this with them. Fans love the show’s nostalgia and energy, and this station bottles that completely. It’s packed with character, full of hits, and we can’t wait for listeners to jump in.”
To replicate the authentic 80s sound WSQK is being processed using a vintage Inovonics FM250 audio processor. These were released in 1983 and were in use across thousands of stations around the world during the latter part of the 80s.
WSKQ ‘The Squawk’ is available on Global Player, via smart speakers (simply say “Alexa, play The Squawk” or “Hey Google, play The Squawk”) and on DAB across London. The station is live from 24 November to 1 January.
Stranger Things Volume 1 launches 27th November at 1am GMT, Volume 2 26th December at 1am GMT and The Finale 1st January at 1am GMT.
