commissions new documentary series Ben Fogle in China
Channel 5 has commissioned a brand-new three-part documentary series, Ben Fogle in China. Each 90-minute episode follows Ben Fogle as he journeys east to uncover China’s vast history and explore how the nation has evolved into one of the world’s leading powers. With exclusive access and remarkable on-the-ground insight, this ambitious and thought-provoking series offers an in-depth look at the heart of a country unlike any other.
Fiercely independent in its storytelling, Ben Fogle in China presents all sides of the Chinese story from within, examining its pivotal role in the modern world alongside its ancient and more recent past.
Across beautifully filmed episodes, Ben embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime journey to truly understand China — to witness its most breathtaking sights, move beyond the stereotypes, and reveal its true identity. Tracing an epic 3,000-year narrative, he explores how centuries of imperial rule gave way to communist revolution under Chairman Mao, and how that in turn led to the astonishing economic transformation that defines state-capitalist China today. Blending first-hand experiences with local voices, Ben captures the pulse of a country that stands at the centre of global life in the 21st century. The series asks: why, and how, has modern China become so essential to us all?
From rugged mountains and sacred temples to sprawling factories and ultra-modern cities, Ben seeks to get under the skin of a nation that continues to shape the future. Filming came with challenges — from navigating strict regulations to working under the eye of state minders — yet the production doesn’t shy away from exploring the complex attention China receives on the world stage.
