Review: Jesus Christ Superstar at Curve, Leicester is flawless ☆☆☆☆☆

Jesus Christ Superstar is on a UK tour and this week, it’s playing at the fantastic Curve theatre in Leicester.

It’s clear from the promotional poster that is is going to have a modern take on an old classic. It does, and it makes for a faultless production. A little bit like Curve’s recent original take on Evita, this is staged in a stripped down, contemporary way. It means the audience can concentrate on the story and the music and its shows like this that the industrial-felling Curve was built to showcase.

The production is flawless.

I mean, everybody in this show is sensational but Jesus, played by Ian McIntosh deserves every award going for this. One of the standout moments comes near the end, where is performance is up there with the best thing we’ve ever seen on stage. To call it “moving” or “powerful” would be an understatement. Genuinely not a dry in the house.

Shem Omari James as Judas, and Hannah Richardson as Mary are equally as mesmorising and songs like “I Don’t Know How To Love Him” are delivered so poignantly and movingly. I, like many, had the misconception that you had to be a devoted church-goer to appreciate this musical, yet the themes, the issues, the emotions will relate to anybody.

Curve is only an hour and a bit of London by train, and Jesus Chris Superstar would be well worth a ticket.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
