Review: Gabby’s Dollshouse pops on the big screen!

If you’re looking for a film that pops off the screen, is bright, funny and wholesome, and will genuinely keep an 8-year-old (or younger) wide-eyed and delighted — then you’ll want to catch Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie. In short: our 8-year-old absolutely loved it.

Staying true to its origins

This film takes the widely-loved Netflix series and gives it a big-screen makeover — but it doesn’t try to widen its appeal by slipping in clever in-jokes or wink-wink asides for the grown-ups. That might sound limiting, but in fact it works in its favour: the film remains sweet, sincere and very much in what made the series popular. The fact that it sticks to the origins means no parent-targeted jokes steer it off course — it’s simply about creativity, fun and cat-filled adventure.

Plot & cast (in a nutshell)

The story follows Gabby (reprised by Laila Lockhart Kraner) as she heads on a road-trip with her Grandma Gigi (Gloria Estefan) to the urban wonderland of Cat Francisco. What really stands out

• Visual feast: The animation is brilliantly executed with no corners cut. The colours, design, music and overall aesthetic are delicious — this is absolutely one of those films that lends itself beautifully to the big screen.

• Feel-good factor: Innocent, joyful, imaginative — the film invites you to escape into a world of cat-themed fun, playful creativity and strong messages about friendship and self-belief.

• Kid-first appeal: Because it doesn’t lean hard into adult humour or “hey-look-what-we-did” moments, it remains entirely tuned to younger viewers — which is a very good thing in this case.

• The cat steals it: Whether it’s the villain’s obsession with cats or the ensemble of “Gabby Cats”, the feline fun is everywhere and works beautifully. Kids will adore it.

A note for parents

If you’re a grown-up who watches hoping for sly asides or layered humour for the adults, you may find this one purely a kids’ film. But that’s exactly the charm – there’s zero cynicism, no edgy jokes, no “for the parents too” band-wagon. And when you’re bringing an 8-year-old (or younger) to the cinema, that’s not a bad thing at all.

Final verdict

Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie hits the sweet spot for a family cinema trip: visually dazzling, sweet-natured, and fun from start to finish. If you can, go see it on the big screen — it deserves that immersive experience. Our 8-year-old gave it a big thumbs-up, and I can easily recommend it as an innocent, feel-good outing you’ll all walk out smiling from.
