Preview: Cape Fear is a must watch thriller coming to Apple TV

Apple TV's remake of the psychological horror launches this Friday

A new chapter in one of cinema’s most enduring psychological thrillers arrives this week as “Cape Fear” makes its global debut on Apple TV+ on Friday, 5 June 2026.

The 10-episode limited series is showrun and executive produced by Nick Antosca, with executive producers Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg returning to a story they helped redefine for modern audiences with the acclaimed 1991 film adaptation. Academy Award nominee Amy Adams and Academy Award winner Javier Bardem both star and serve as executive producers, while Patrick Wilson, Joe Anders, Lily Collias, Malia Pyles and CCH Pounder round out the ensemble cast.

The series will launch with its first two episodes on Friday, followed by new episodes weekly through 31 July 2026.

Inspired by Scorsese’s 1991 remake, the new adaptation centres on married attorneys Anna Bowden (Adams) and Tom Bowden (Wilson), whose lives are thrown into turmoil when Max Cady (Bardem) — a notorious killer they helped put behind bars — is released from prison and begins seeking revenge. What follows is a psychological battle that threatens not only their safety but the foundations of their family.

The new series continues a legacy that stretches back nearly seven decades. “Cape Fear” is based on John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners, which inspired the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum before being reimagined by Scorsese in 1991. The earlier remake became one of the director’s most commercially successful films and remains widely regarded as a standout psychological thriller.

Critics praised the 1991 film for its intensity, moral ambiguity and Robert De Niro’s chilling portrayal of Max Cady. Roger Ebert described it as “impressive moviemaking,” noting how Scorsese transformed a conventional thriller into a story driven by guilt, obsession and flawed characters. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus called the film “a gleefully mainstream shocker” elevated by a “terrifying Robert De Niro performance.”

Early reactions to the Apple TV+ series suggest the new adaptation aims to preserve that psychological tension while expanding the story for a longer-form format. Recent reviews have highlighted Adams’ performance and the show’s exploration of justice, trauma and revenge, while retaining the unsettling atmosphere that has defined every version of “Cape Fear.”

Behind the camera, the series comes from UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group, and Amblin Television. Antosca executive produces alongside Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat, while Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey produce alongside Spielberg for Amblin Television. Academy Award nominee Morten Tyldum directs the pilot episode and also serves as an executive producer.

With an award-winning cast, heavyweight creative team and a story that has captivated audiences across multiple generations, “Cape Fear” arrives as one of the summer’s most anticipated thriller releases. Whether viewers are discovering Max Cady for the first time or revisiting one of psychological horror’s most infamous antagonists, the series promises a tense and unsettling journey into revenge, fear and the consequences of the past.
