Former England rugby international Joe Marler is set to tackle a whole new kind of opponent, making history as the first-ever “Celebrity Gladiator” on the iconic BBC series Gladiators.
Trading the rugby pitch for the high-octane arena, Marler will unleash his new alter ego—Mauler—when the hit entertainment show returns for its fourth series in 2027.
Known throughout his sporting career for his formidable physicality, uncompromising playing style, and eccentric sense of humor, Marler’s transition to the arena floor promises to bring both raw power and plenty of entertainment to the classic test of strength, speed, and endurance.

What to Expect in Series 4
Filming is already underway at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena, where Marler is stepping into the fray alongside the existing roster of fan-favorite Gladiators.
- Special Appearances: Rather than taking on a traditional Contender role, Mauler will make guest appearances throughout the 11-episode run to challenge Contenders in selected events.
- Celebrity Crossover: The upcoming run will also feature a dedicated 60-minute Gladiators Celebrity Special alongside the main series.
- The Ultimate Test: Contenders will have to dig deeper than ever as they face off against a seasoned international athlete built for maximum impact.
Behind the Scenes
The revival remains a joint production by Hungry Bear Media and MGM Alternative UK (a division of Amazon MGM Studios) for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. The series was commissioned by Kalpna Patel-Knight, BBC Head of Entertainment Commissioning, with executive producers Dan Baldwin, Lou Brown, Reshmi Bajnath, and Dom Bird leading the creative team.
Originally created by Johnny C. Ferraro and Dan Carr in the United States, the revamped British format has recaptured prime-time audiences since its return, with Marler’s debut marking one of its biggest star additions yet.
Viewers can catch Mauler in action when Gladiators returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2027.
