Sky TV has unveiled the trailer for its upcoming original drama series, Mussolini: Son of the Century, coming to Sky and NOW on 4th February 2025.
Directed by BAFTA winner Joe Wright (Darkest Hour, Atonement, Cyrano), the eight-part series had its world premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. Produced by Sky Studios and Lorenzo Mieli for The Apartment (a Fremantle group company) in collaboration with Pathé, Small Forward Productions, Fremantle, CINECITTÀ S.p.A., and Sky, the series promises a compelling historical narrative.
Leading the cast is Luca Marinelli, one of Italy’s most acclaimed actors and a Shooting Stars Award recipient, who takes on the role of Benito Mussolini.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name, the series chronicles the rise of a nation succumbing to dictatorship and follows Mussolini’s tumultuous journey, marked by repeated comebacks. Spanning from the establishment of Fasci Italiani in 1919 to Mussolini’s infamous 1925 parliamentary speech after the murder of socialist leader Giacomo Matteotti, the drama also delves into Mussolini’s personal relationships, including his wife Rachele, his lover Margherita Sarfatti, and other notable figures of the era.
The screenplay, written by Stefano Bises (Gomorrah, The New Pope, ZeroZeroZero) and Davide Serino (1992, 1993, Il Re, Exterior Night), with contributions from Antonio Scurati, prioritizes historical accuracy. Every event, character, dialogue, and speech depicted is verified through multiple sources.
The series features an original score by Tom Rowlands of The Chemical Brothers, the iconic British electronic duo known for pioneering big beat music. Rowlands, a multi-award-winning artist with accolades including six Grammy Awards, a Brit Award, an MTV Europe Music Award, and an NME Award, adds a modern sonic dimension to the historical drama.
