Masterpiece in the Making: ‘Hamnet’ Arrives on Sky Cinema and NOW This August

One of the most talked-about film adaptations in recent years is finally heading to small screens across the UK. Hamnet, the tender and emotionally charged historical drama from Academy Award®-winning writer/director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), will be available to stream on Sky Cinema Premiere and NOW starting Friday 14 August.

Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling 2020 novel, Hamnet reimagines the intimate family history behind one of literature’s greatest achievements: William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The Heartbreak Behind the Masterpiece

Set against the lush countryside of 16th-century Warwickshire, the film explores the passionate romance between young Latin tutor William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and the spirited, free-natured Agnes (Jessie Buckley). Their quiet family life in Stratford-upon-Avon is ruptured when tragedy strikes: their 11-year-old son, Hamnet, succumbs to the plague.

Rather than focusing solely on the Bard’s rise to theatrical fame, Zhao’s lens focuses on the raw, unspoken weight of parental grief — showing how profound loss and enduring love ultimately gave birth to Shakespeare’s defining tragedy.

Powerhouse Performances

At the center of the film is a magnetic lead performance by Jessie Buckley, who delivers an Oscar and BAFTA-winning turn as Agnes. Buckley brings fierce emotional depth to a woman navigating grief and motherhood.

She is joined by an extraordinary supporting cast:
