ludwig season 3

Ludwig has officially been renewed for a third series by the BBC ahead of the highly anticipated launch of series two later this year. Following record-breaking ratings and becoming the BBC’s biggest new scripted series since 2024, the hit detective comedy starring David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Key details:

  • Ludwig renewed for series 3 ahead of the release of series 2.
  • Returns to BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
  • Stars David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin.
  • Series one attracted 9.5 million viewers in 28 days, with episode one now reaching 11.8 million viewers.
  • Created and written by Mark Brotherhood and produced by Big Talk Studios.

The six-part detective comedy has become one of the BBC’s biggest recent scripted successes. Series one drew an audience of 9.5 million viewers within its first 28 days, making it the broadcaster’s biggest comedy launch since at least 2018. The opening episode has continued to grow its audience beyond that period, with total viewing now reaching 11.8 million.

Created and written by Mark Brotherhood, Ludwig stars David Mitchell as the puzzle-loving John “Ludwig” Taylor, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin as Lucy Betts-Taylor, the wife of John’s missing twin brother James. The series is produced by Big Talk Studios, part of ITV Studios, in association with That Mitchell And Webb Company, and is co-produced with ZDF for Germany.

David Mitchell says: “I am delighted that Ludwig will be returning to solve more of Mark Brotherhood’s brilliant mysteries. I can’t wait to get started and have renewed the subscription on my denouement-learning app.”

Kenton Allen, Executive Producer and CEO of Big Talk Studios, says: “Ludwig has become one of those rare shows that genuinely cuts through — critically, commercially and internationally. We’re hugely grateful to the BBC, ZDF and ITV Studios for the confidence they’ve shown in greenlighting a third season ahead of the launch of series two.

“What Mark Brotherhood has created is brilliantly original, hugely entertaining and deceptively distinctive in the way it blends smart comedy with a richly satisfying detective engine. At the heart of that success is the remarkable partnership between David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, brought to life by an exceptional creative team. In a crowded global market, for audiences to have embraced Ludwig on this scale feels incredibly special. There’s clearly nothing puzzling about that.”

Jon Petrie, BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning, says: “Ludwig is exactly the kind of smart, distinctive, audience-pleasing show we love at BBC Comedy. Sharp writing, a compelling story, big laughs and, naturally, a generous helping of puzzles. The team at Big Talk have crafted something truly distinctive and much-loved, and we’re excited to see what mysteries Ludwig tackles next.”

Series three will consist of six hour-long episodes, with Mark Brotherhood returning as writer and Chris Foggin serving as lead director. The executive producers are Kenton Allen and Toby Welch for Big Talk Studios, alongside Mark Brotherhood, David Mitchell, Kathryn O’Connor and Chris Sussman. Claus Wunn and Frank Seyberth executive produce for ZDF, while Anthony Wilcox is series producer and Anya Wilson serves as producer.

The new series was commissioned by BBC Director of Comedy Commissioning Jon Petrie, with Seb Barwell acting as commissioning editor. Produced in association with ITV Studios, which also handles international distribution, Ludwig will return after series two premieres later this year.

Series one is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer, with series two arriving later in 2026.
