The live-action adaptation has quietly emerged as one of the year’s sleeper successes, crossing the $100 million mark at the global box office despite modest early projections. The film’s performance has been driven by a highly engaged fanbase, many of whom have returned for repeat viewings, while positive word of mouth has helped attract wider audiences in the weeks following its release.

Directed by Travis Knight, the film marks the long-awaited return of the iconic franchise to the big screen and has been praised by fans for embracing the mythology of Eternia while delivering a modern, large-scale fantasy adventure.

In Masters of the Universe, Prince Adam (Nicholas Galitzine) is reunited with the Sword of Power after being separated from it for 15 years. Returning to Eternia, he discovers his home world devastated and under the tyrannical rule of Skeletor (Jared Leto). To save his family and his kingdom, Adam joins forces with Teela (Camila Mendes) and Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms (Idris Elba), before embracing his destiny as He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe.

The film also stars Alison Brie, James Purefoy, Morena Baccarin, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson and Charlotte Riley, with Kristen Wiig lending her voice to Roboto.

Masters of the Universe is executive produced by Ynon Kreiz, Bill Bannerman and David Bloomfield. Producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, Steve Tisch and DeVon Franklin, from a screenplay by Chris Butler and Aaron Nee & Adam Nee & Dave Callaham.

An official streaming date has yet to be announced by Prime Video, but the film is expected to arrive on the service worldwide in August, following other Amazon quick-releases including Crime 101 and Red One.
