Where to watch The All Creatures Great and Small Christmas Specials

Channel 5, 21 December

Fans of All Creatures Great and Small are in for a treat on 21 December, with not one but two Christmas specials to enjoy from 8pm on Channel 5.

First up, The Yorkshire Vet All Creatures Great And Small Special.

Just over 50 years ago, an unassuming vet called Alf Wight, under the name James Herriot, put pen to paper and created a global phenomenon.

The series of books – All Creatures Great and Small – tell the story of Alf’s life and work as a vet in the glorious landscape of North Yorkshire. Nearly 30 years after his death, the name James Herriot lives on in a TV adaptation of the books, and through its modern-day counterpart, The Yorkshire Vet. This is the story of when the two worlds meet.

With exclusive behind the scenes access to the film set and studios, Peter Wright and Shona Searson from The Yorkshire Vet, go back in time to experience 1940s Darrowby at the most wonderful time of the year, and get an unseen glimpse into the magic that the Christmas special has to offer.

To top off the excitement, Peter gets a very special opportunity to feature in the series himself – a world away from his life as a Yorkshire vet.

After experiencing life behind the scenes of the popular drama, it’s the actors turn to discover what life is like as a Yorkshire vet. Anna Madeley who plays Mrs Hall and Samuel West (Siegfried Farnon) head to Thirsk to discover more about the magical stories of James Herriot. And who better to learn from than Peter Wright, who worked with both Alf Wight (also known as James Herriot) and Donald Sinclair, who Sam’s character is based on.

At 9pm, it’s this year’s festive special, ‘On A Wing and a Prayer’.

Amidst the festive season, Christmas unfolds with a poignant twist for James, who finds himself stationed miles away at the RAF training base. A heartfelt conversation with his heavily pregnant wife, Helen, stirs a resolute determination in him to be by her side. However, James is confronted with limited options, compounded by the fact that RAF mascot Georgie requires his assistance. In the throes of this emotional dilemma, James grapples with making the right decisions that could reunite him with Helen in time for Christmas.

On the home front in Darrowby, Mrs. Hall takes charge of organizing a community Christmas celebration, infusing the quaint town with holiday cheer. Meanwhile, a festive dispute arises between Siegfried and Carmody, as they engage in a lighthearted argument over the coveted role of Father Christmas for the year.

As the Yuletide festivities unfold, Carmody, a newcomer, is embraced by the warm community of Darrowby and unexpectedly finds joy in the celebrations. Simultaneously, James, navigating the challenges of his military obligations, undergoes a profound learning experience that imparts a crucial lesson. In a heartwarming turn of events, James is rewarded with a surprise that adds a touch of magic to the holiday season.

Amidst the laughter, camaraderie, and the spirit of giving, this Christmas tale weaves together the threads of duty, family, and the true meaning of the season, promising a festive narrative filled with emotions and unexpected delights.
