Explore ‘Happy Valley’ country with Shire Cruisers
Nestled in the heart of West Yorkshire, Hebden Bridge is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Recently, my family and I embarked on a delightful canal weekend adventure in this charming town, courtesy of Shire Cruises. Allow me to share our unforgettable experience, weaving together the picturesque beauty of Hebden Bridge and the exceptional service provided by Shire Cruises.
A Scenic Canal Journey: Our canal weekend adventure began with a warm welcome from the Shire Cruises team at their base in Sowerby Bridge. After a brief orientation and safety instructions, we eagerly boarded our narrowboat, ready to set sail along the serene waterways. The narrowboat, well-equipped and comfortable, provided a cozy home away from home for our family.
The Route: Our chosen route took us on a tranquil journey through the captivating Calder Valley, which is known for its stunning scenery and historical significance. The route allowed us to explore the idyllic surroundings at a leisurely pace, making it perfect for families looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Hebden Bridge – A Quaint Haven: As we cruised along the canals, the highlight of our journey was undoubtedly Hebden Bridge itself. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this town is a haven for artists, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a peaceful retreat. The canal meanders through the heart of Hebden Bridge, offering a unique perspective of its picturesque setting.
Exploring the Town: The town of Hebden Bridge is stunning and one we fell in love with. You’ll recognize much of it from BBC drama Happy Valley and that is part of the fun of visiting – spotting the well known locations! We moored our narrowboat and ventured ashore to explore this charming town. Hebden Bridge welcomed us with its quirky independent shops, artisanal cafes, and a vibrant arts scene. The local market was a delightful surprise, offering a diverse range of handmade crafts and locally sourced produce.
Scenic Walks: For those with a love for the outdoors, Hebden Bridge offers an array of scenic walks. The nearby Hardcastle Crags, owned by the National Trust, are a must-visit. We embarked on a family hike through the woodlands, marveling at the cascading waterfalls and verdant landscapes. It was a perfect way to soak in the natural beauty of the area.
Cruising Comfort: Our return journey on the narrowboat was equally enchanting. We savored the leisurely pace, taking in the sights and sounds of the canal. The tranquility of the water, the gentle rustling of leaves, and the occasional chirping of birds provided the backdrop to our peaceful voyage.
Shire Cruises – Exceptional Service: Throughout our canal weekend, Shire Cruises impressed us with their exceptional service. From the moment we stepped aboard, their friendly and knowledgeable staff made us feel right at home. Their commitment to safety, the well-maintained narrowboat, and the thorough briefing provided us with peace of mind throughout our journey. You wont leave the base until you know exactly what you’re doing – the staff are simply exceptional.
Our family canal weekend in Hebden Bridge with Shire Cruises was an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It allowed us to slow down, reconnect with nature, and explore a town with a unique charm. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, outdoor adventure, or a taste of local culture, Hebden Bridge has it all.
Shire Cruises facilitated our exploration of this enchanting region, making our trip not only memorable but also seamless and enjoyable. Our family – two grandparents, two parents and two children all absolutely loved it, and got so much out of it. There’s something for everybody to do, albeit the physical challenge of working the locks or simply taking in the breathtaking views.
If you’re looking for a tranquil family getaway that combines the beauty of nature with the comfort of a narrowboat, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on a canal weekend with Shire Cruises in Hebden Bridge. It’s an experience that will leave you with cherished memories and a newfound appreciation for the serenity of canal life.
