Castaway is on Channel 4 tonight at 7pm.
Tom Hanks won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the latter-day Robinson Crusoe who is forced to readjust his obsessive perception of time when he becomes marooned on a desert island in this survival drama directed by Robert Zemeckis. As a scheduling consultant for FedEx, it’s safe to say Chuck Noland (Hanks) is obsessed with time – doing stuff on it and saving it. He’s like a less manic, less funny John Cleese in Clockwise. He basically travels the world on a tight itinerary to tell FedEx employees how to stick to their tight itinerary.
The one thing he can’t do in a timely fashion, though, is keep promises made to his partner Kelly (Helen Hunt). So, when he leaves her at Christmas with the words ‘I’ll be right back’, it seems only fitting that he is about to learn something about time… although his lesson is a little hard on Kelly and the other passengers on his plane. The plane crashes and Chuck is washed up on a land that is no land and upon which no man has trod. He is alone. He now has nothing but time. Time to wait. Time to kill. What, if anything, will he learn about time now that he has so much of it?
