BBC One announces brand new eight-part drama series.
The BBC has announced Open Water, a new drama series inspired by Caleb Azumah Nelson’s critically acclaimed debut novel of the same title. Produced by Mam Tor Productions (a Banijay UK company) and B-Side Productions, the eight-part series will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Azumah Nelson takes the lead as the drama’s writer, director, and executive producer.
The story follows Marcus, a retail worker striving to establish himself as a photographer, and Effie, a university dance student in Dublin. Their instant, magnetic connection is complicated by the fact that Effie is dating Marcus’ friend, Samuel—a boundary Marcus refuses to cross. Their collaboration on a project documenting Black creatives in London brings them closer, testing whether their growing friendship can withstand the allure of deeper feelings.
As their mutual attraction intensifies, Marcus and Effie seem destined for one another, their bond as profound as the ocean. Yet, love alone may not be enough, and the path to each other is fraught with challenges. Can they navigate these waters, or will they be overwhelmed?
Caleb Azumah Nelson shared his excitement about the adaptation, saying: “Working with Mam Tor, B-Side, and the BBC to bring Open Water to the screen has been an absolute joy. I’m eager for viewers to meet Marcus and Effie, and to step into their world—their intimate spaces, communities, and desires. I’m so grateful to tell this story at this moment.”
Tally Garner, executive producer at Mam Tor Productions, praised the project: “Caleb Azumah Nelson’s Open Water is an extraordinary, deeply meaningful love story. It’s a privilege to bring his unique vision to life alongside the talented teams at the BBC and B-Side.”
Matimba Kabalika, executive producer at B-Side Productions, added: “Open Water is a stunning tribute to love, youth, and the beauty of life’s small joys, as well as an honest exploration of finding your way in love and life. It’s a delight to work with Caleb, Tally Garner, and the exceptional BBC team to bring this story to screen.”
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, called the series “a tender, bold, and dazzling tale of early love and the power of being truly seen. The response to Caleb’s novel was extraordinary, and we’re honored to work with him on bringing this breathtaking romance to audiences on the BBC.”
