The Wombats to play Radio 2 Sofa Session

The Wombats will perform a Radio 2 Sofa Session on Jo Whiley’s show this Wednesday evening.

The band, who are just confirmed to play Radio 1’s Big Weekend festival in Liverpool, will perform tracks from their new album ‘Oh! The Ocean’ and a cover.

The Wombats, an indie rock band hailing from Liverpool, England, have enjoyed a long and successful career, earning a dedicated fanbase and critical acclaim for their distinctive sound, catchy hooks, and witty lyrics. Formed in 2003, the band consists of Matthew Murphy (vocals, guitar), Tord Øverland-Knudsen (bass, backing vocals), and Dan Haggis (drums). Their infectious energy, quirky style, and blend of danceable indie rock with elements of new wave, post-punk, and electro-pop have made them a standout in the British music scene.

The Wombats gained early attention with their debut album Guided By Voices (2007), which showcased their unique blend of jangly guitars, punchy rhythms, and witty lyrics. The album featured the breakout hit “Let’s Dance to Joy Division,” a catchy anthem about heartbreak and nostalgia that quickly became a fan favorite. The song’s infectious energy propelled them into the indie spotlight, and the band began to build a loyal following both in the UK and internationally.

Their second album, This Modern Glitch (2011), saw them refining their sound, incorporating more electronic influences while maintaining their signature blend of upbeat melodies and introspective lyrics. The album spawned hits like “Techno Fan” and “Jump Into the Fog,” further establishing The Wombats as a mainstay in the indie rock scene. This Modern Glitch received positive reviews, with critics praising its mix of emotional depth and danceable energy.

In 2015, the band released Glitterbug, an album that marked a more polished, radio-friendly sound while still retaining their trademark wit and charm. The album included the hit single “Greek Tragedy,” which became one of their biggest successes to date. Its catchy melody and darkly humorous lyrics resonated with listeners, and the track was embraced by both fans and critics alike.

After a few years of touring and a brief hiatus, The Wombats returned in 2018 with Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life. The album featured tracks like “Turn” and “Black Flamingo,” continuing their evolution while embracing their roots in indie rock. The band’s ability to experiment with new sounds while staying true to their quirky, fun-loving style helped them maintain their relevance in an ever-changing music landscape.

The Wombats’ success has not only been measured by chart performance but also by their ability to consistently draw large crowds at festivals and sell-out concerts around the world. Their energetic live performances and ability to connect with audiences have solidified their place as one of the leading bands in the indie scene.

Throughout their career, The Wombats have built a reputation for their clever songwriting, infectious melodies, and dynamic live shows. As they continue to evolve, they remain a beloved and influential force in modern indie rock, proving that their blend of humor, heart, and electrifying energy resonates with fans of all ages.
