Mufasa: The Lion King is expected to be released on Disney Plus on Good Friday, 18 April 2025.
Disney’s animated sequel has been a massive success in cinemas, taking more that $530million worldwide. In comparison, Robbie Williams’ biopic ‘Better Man’ has taken around £11million.
Mufasa: The Lion King chronicles the remarkable rise of the Pride Lands’ beloved king, has already captured the imagination of audiences in theaters and now looks poised to roar into living rooms worldwide.
Directed by Academy Award winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), Mufasa: The Lion King offers a new perspective on the legendary ruler. The story, framed as a narrative told by Rafiki to Kiara, Simba and Nala’s inquisitive daughter, takes viewers on a journey through Mufasa’s humble beginnings. As an orphaned cub, Mufasa finds himself alone in the wilderness until an unexpected encounter with Taka—a lion heir of royal lineage—alters the course of his destiny. Their shared adventure reveals a tapestry of trials, triumphs, and the bonds of friendship, all under the looming shadow of a formidable foe.
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Aaron Pierre as the young Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John Kani, and Thandiwe Newton, with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter reprising her role as Nala alongside Donald Glover as Simba. Scene-stealing comic relief comes from the beloved duo Timon and Pumbaa, voiced once again by Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen. The impressive ensemble also features Mads Mikkelsen, Keith David, Anika Noni Rose, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who contributed original songs to the soundtrack.
Critics and fans alike have praised Mufasa: The Lion King for its groundbreaking blend of live-action filmmaking techniques and photoreal computer-generated imagery. Produced by Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, with Peter Tobyansen as executive producer, the film balances visual spectacle with an emotionally rich narrative that explores themes of resilience, identity, and leadership.
While Disney has yet to confirm the release date, the timing of Good Friday could be symbolic, aligning with themes of rebirth and legacy that echo throughout Mufasa’s story. If the rumors are true, Mufasa: The Lion King could become the centerpiece of Easter weekend family viewing, offering a heartwarming tale of courage and kinship.
Official confirmation on a streaming dates is expected from Disney next month. The studio’s other big winter release Moana 2 is likely to be released on Disney Plus in March.
