Gordon Smart to host 5Live Evening Show

Gordon Smart to host 5Live evenings from 1 Jan 2024

Starting from Monday, 1 January, esteemed journalist and broadcaster Gordon Smart is set to broaden his role at BBC Radio 5 Live, taking on the mantle of the new host for the late-night show airing from 10 pm to 1 am.

In addition to helming his existing Sunday show from 8 pm to 10 pm, Gordon will engage listeners in late-night discussions and bring in notable guests from Monday to Thursday. During these slots, he will provide reflections on the day's most significant news and sports stories.

Gordon has been an integral part of the broader 5 Live presenting team for over a year, contributing to various programs on the station, from Breakfast to Drive.

His impactful contributions have resonated with listeners, leading to the establishment of his own weekly Sunday night show from Glasgow in July.

Expressing his excitement about the new role, Gordon remarks, "I am thrilled to be given the weeknights gig on 5 Live. It has been such a privilege working with the hugely talented team here over the last 18 months. The welcome I’ve been given from staff and listeners has been really special, and I’m really looking forward to getting to know them even better."

He adds, "I love the station and have been a huge fan for a long time. I can’t wait to get stuck in alongside some of the best in the business."

BBC Radio 5 Live Controller, Heidi Dawson, acknowledges Gordon's suitability for the late-night slot, stating, "Late-night radio listeners need a presenter who’s great company, and Gordon definitely is that. A sharp journalist and brilliant storyteller with great sporting insights, Gordon will be a fantastic companion for our evening audiences."

Gordon's shows originating from Glasgow and Salford play a vital role in the BBC’s Across the UK strategy, aiming to bring the corporation closer to audiences nationwide. This initiative seeks to better reflect, represent, and serve all parts of the UK. By 2027/28, the BBC plans to invest at least an extra £700 million cumulatively across the UK, generating an additional economic benefit of over £850 million.

This ambitious plan aims not only to create more job opportunities and training avenues but also to enhance representation both on and off the screen.

Gordon is all set to kick off his new late-night show on Monday, 1 January, at 10 pm.
