Humax TV Tonight: Cruising with Susan Calman continues in Tahiti and French Polynesia

Cruising with Susan Calman is on Channel 5 tonight at 8pm. In the second part of her cruise around French Polynesia, Susan continues her journey off the coast of Bora Bora, before going on to explore Mo’orea and then heading back to Tahiti.

In Bora Bora Susan learns about the traditional outrigger – or, in Tahitian, a Va’a. It’s a canoe-like boat with a stabiliser that was originally used to explore the many islands in French Polynesia.

Back onboard, there’s just time to get some steps in as Susan exercises with a few laps around the ship’s deck (and rewards herself with a cocktail!) before she’s back on dry land, taking a bus tour around Bora Bora. She takes in the history and culture of the island, including how to wear the Tahitian pareo, a type of sarong that has become synonymous with French Polynesia.

After a quick stop off at Bloody Mary’s – the local bar and famous hangout of some of the biggest names in Hollywood who used to visit the island – Susan rounds off her day with a beach party. She joins her fellow cruisers on a private motu - or small island – for some traditional food, Polynesian dancing and a spectacular fire show.

On the final leg of her cruise, Susan sails into the breath-taking lagoon surrounding the island of Mo’orea.. and chats to the Captain of the ship Belinda about the difficulties of navigating such narrow and shallow waters, and about how she came to captain the seas and her previous maritime adventures around the British coast.

On Mo’orea Susan meets Temoana, a local photographer and environmentalist who takes her snorkelling and tells her about the importance of protecting this very special part of the world. She joins local food guide Heimata and his mum at her home, where she helps to make the classic Polynesian dish Poisson Cru, using the fish caught that day in the waters off Mo’orea.

Finally, back in Tahiti Susan visits a turtle sanctuary and hears from Helene about the important work they do to protect and treat the sick and injured turtles found in the South Pacific ocean around French Polynesia. It’s an emotional visit, as Susan sees the care given to the turtles and is reminded again that this is such a special part of the world.
