999 On The Front Line

999 On The Front Line (series 10, episode 4) is on Channel 4 Tuesday 20 February at 8pm.

The new series continues, following another typical 12-hour shift with the paramedics of West Midlands Ambulance Service. Filmed as hospital waiting times rocket and the pressures on the service increase dramatically, the series lays bare what life is really like on the front line at the Stoke, Stafford and Willenhall ambulance hubs.

When the 999 call comes from a GP surgery, you know the job is serious. It's a Category 1 call for a child suffering a severe asthma attack. Paramedics are also called out to a young woman who has multiple sclerosis and is in considerable pain, and an elderly woman with a suspected broken hip. For most of us a nosebleed is an inconvenience, but when it's the 10th you've had in 11 days and you're losing a lot of blood each time, it's a serious condition. And a man with advanced bowel cancer is struggling to breathe and is in a lot of pain.

A&E is not always the right place for certain patients, so the paramedics arrange for a district nurse to visit with the pain relief that he desperately needs.
