Ben Fogle heads to the jewel of the Indian Ocean – Sri Lanka – to stay with Naveen and Anke who have made their home in the country’s highlands. He uncovers why they swapped one of the biggest cities in the world, for a simple off-grid existence miles from civilisation.

Ben learns of the struggles they faced settling into their new lives and discovers if they mean to sever their ties with the outside world completely for the draw of the wild.

Ben’s hosts have set up home in the tranquil ruins of a tea plantation. Entirely off-grid, glass pods offer off-the-beaten-track travelers a unique place to sleep. Ben gets stuck in as he fixes a burst pipe, renders walls with cow dung, makes supply trips to town and embraces a small business that sustains the local community.

He discovers that despite some tricky years, his hosts now embrace a new-found work-life balance that brings them calmness and contentment.
