From Grantchester to Hollywood: Tom Brittney’s next move

theversion.co Tom Brittney to star in new Netflix film, Back in Action.

Following the news that season 9 of Grantchester will be Tom Brittney’s last, the actor has his sights set on Hollywood with another film appearance already in the can.

Brittney will appear in Back In Action, a new spy-action/comedy which filmed earlier this year for Netflix.

On speaking about his departure as Will Davenport from Grantchester, which airs on ITV in the UK and on PBS Masterpiece in the U.S., Tom said "I've had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years. I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for.

"I’ll miss it more than anything. But it’s time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me, and I’m so excited for Rishi to join the Grantchester family."

According to the official synopsis for season 9, "It’s 1961 and life is good for Will and Geordie. The families are always together, from Sunday lunches to planning summer holidays and with honorary Grandparents Mrs C and Jack, and adopted uncles Daniel and Leonard, it’s one big happy family! But when Will is approached with a life changing offer, can he leave Grantchester, and Geordie behind?”

Back in Action was filmed earlier this year and stars Jamie Foxx. The film hit the headlines as Foxx was able to tempt Cameron Diaz out of retirement, for a cameo which she filmed in London. Andrew Scott, Jamie Demetriou, Glenn Close and Kyle Chandler also star and the film is set to be released in early 2024.

Back In Action is Tom’s second big film outing, following a role in Tom Hanks’s nautical Apple TV+ movie, Greyhound. He’s busy off-camera too, working on his own company Wild Nest Pictures. One project the company is working on is No Questions Asked, a TV drama based on the controversial 2018 arrests of Birney and fellow Northern Irish journalist Barry McCaffrey. The two men investigated the unsolved massacre of six innocent men by Loyalist paramilitaries at a small rural pub in the village of Loughinisland, Northern Ireland in 1994.

Brittney said: “I met Trevor and Barry while they were on bail and thought their story was incredible. It was such a clear attack on the freedom of the press, and showed the lengths our own government was capable of going to stop any investigation into their actions. I knew immediately that their story would make a thrilling and necessary drama in the same vein as Spotlight or Dark Waters”.

Another is Mayfair 100. Set in London during World War One, the drama explores a covert female task force who uncover a series of dark and gruesome crimes. Delving into the darkest side of life on the home front, the series blends fascinating female characters with stories about soldiers, suffragettes, gangs and the unexplored immigrant communities of 1915 London. A compelling, dynamic look at this period, told through a fresh lens and centred on the relationships of an ensemble cast of misfits as they solve crimes.

Wild Nest also acquired the rights to Alan Huffman’s book HERE I AM, about the life of acclaimed war photographer Tim Hetherington, who died in Libya in 2011. Tom will apparently star.

Beyond these projects, Brittney has also been touted as the next actor to play James Bond.

Grantchester Season 9 will air in Spring 2024.
