Radio 1 to playlist Kylie’s Padam Padam

Radio 1 are set to make a u-turn and will playlist Kylie Minogue’s Padam Padam.

The station has come under fire from fans and critics for refusing to play the track and even excluding it from Official Chart preview shows. It’s caused an uproar in the music world, with many labelling the station “ageist” for not playing the 55 year old icon’s track, even though it’s in the official top ten.

Kylie’s biggest single in a decade has been streamed hundreds of thousands of times, placing it at the top of the iTunes chart, and it’s also making waves in the U.S. and Europe.

Defending their decision not to play the track, annoying fans further by claiming it isn’t good enough to make the playlist. A spokesperson said “Tracks are chosen on musical merit and their relevance to our young audience on a case-by-case basis and while around 40 per cent of the country’s 15 to 29-year-olds tune in to Radio 1 each week, an artist’s age is never a factor.”

It’s despite Kylie headlining BBC Radio 2’s upcoming concert, Radio 2 in the Park, and, many have called the statement contradictory because the track has been played on the station’s Party Anthems show.

icymi.co.uk has learnt that Radio 1 is about to have a change of heart however, with Padam Padam slated to make the playlist which is refreshed on Friday. A source told us “this shows us what fan power can do. It’s not a good look for Radio 1 to be out of touch with so many listeners and Padam Padam has taken on a life of its own with a massive amount of streams since its release. It simply can’t be ignored”.

Since this story was published, Kylie has confirmed the news on her social media.

Despite Radio 1’s ban, the UK’s biggest commercial stations Heart, Capital and Hits Radio have all been playing the tune since its release.

It remains #1 on the official Big Top 40 chart.
