Interview: Michael Salami on the success of Supacell

Supacell” is a Netflix original series that combines elements of science fiction, drama, and superhero genres. Set in modern-day South London, the show revolves around a diverse group of ordinary Black British individuals who suddenly acquire extraordinary superpowers. Unlike typical superhero narratives, the characters in “Supacell” do not have any prior connection to each other, nor do they have any clue why they’ve been chosen to wield these abilities.

As they navigate their new lives, they must also grapple with the challenges that come with their powers, including moral dilemmas, the impact on their personal relationships, and the attention of those who seek to exploit or control them. Each character’s journey is uniquely personal, yet interconnected, reflecting broader themes of identity, community, and social justice.

Created and directed by Rapman, known for his work on “Blue Story,” “Supacell” offers a fresh perspective on the superhero genre by focusing on underrepresented voices and highlighting the lived experiences of Black Britons. The series blends action-packed sequences with compelling storytelling, exploring what it means to be a hero in today’s world.

Actor Michael Salami spoke to icymi.co.uk about the show’s success…

Congratulations on the incredible success of Supacell. What do you make of the reaction it’s had and what do you put that success down to?

Thank you so much! The reaction has been nothing short of amazing, and it’s honestly been a dream come true. I think the success of Supacell can be attributed to its authenticity and relatability. The grounded nature of the characters, the realness of their struggles, and the way the show captures the essence of South London all play a huge part in why it resonates with so many people across different cultures and backgrounds. Rapman’s vision and the talent of everyone involved made it something truly special. It’s a story that people can see themselves in, and I think that’s why it’s been such a hit globally.

It looks incredible on screen. What’s it like filming something that involves a lot of green screen and post-production?

Filming with green screen is always a unique experience because you’re relying heavily on your imagination. But what really stood out to me during this production was how much care and attention went into filming black complexions, especially when it comes to lighting and colour grading. Often, in productions that use heavy green screen, black actors can end up looking washed out or not as vibrant as they should. But the Supacell team made sure that our skin tones were captured beautifully. They used lighting setups and techniques that highlighted our complexions perfectly, which made the green screen work blend seamlessly with our natural look. So, when you watch the final product, not only does the CGI look amazing, but you also see our skin popping in a way that feels authentic and real. It’s a testament to the talent and dedication of the crew, who wanted to ensure that we looked our best on screen, no matter the technical challenges.

It doesn’t just look good, it sounds good. What do you make of the soundtrack?

The soundtrack is fire! Music is such an integral part of storytelling, and the soundtrack of Supacell really enhances the mood and energy of the show. It’s vibrant, it’s fresh, and it’s got that authentic South London sound that just hits differently. The music really complements the scenes and helps to bring out the emotions and intensity in each moment. I’m proud to be part of a project that not only looks great but also sounds amazing.

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, how would you describe your character?

Gabriel is the type of friend everyone needs in their life. He’s grounded, loyal, and always there to support his friends, especially Michael, played by Tosin Cole. He’s that guy you go to when you need advice or someone to keep it real with you. Gabriel is the voice of reason in the show, and he often says what the audience is thinking. He’s also a key part of the group, providing a safe space for everyone at the Onyx Bar, which is like a character in itself. Gabriel’s got a lot of heart and playing him has been an absolute joy.

Supacell not only breaks the mould with its diverse cast, it also broke the mould giving opportunities for black creatives. Do you hope Supacell might set a precedent?

Absolutely. Supacell is proof that diverse stories and voices are not just important—they’re essential. The show has given opportunities to so many black creatives both in front of and behind the camera, and I sincerely hope it sets a precedent for future productions. It’s vital that our industry continues to evolve and recognize the value of diverse perspectives. When you bring authentic voices into the storytelling process, it resonates more powerfully with audiences. I’m proud to be part of something that’s pushing those boundaries and setting a new standard.

There is some phenomenal TV coming out of Britain at the moment. Are there any other shows that you’re particularly enjoying and would love to have a role in?

The television industry is definitely delivering some top-tier television right now! I’ve been really impressed with shows like The Bear and Ozark. They’re telling raw, compelling stories with incredible talent behind them. If I had the chance, I’d love to be part of something like The Bear —it’s such a powerful series that reflects real issues in a way that’s both gripping and thought-provoking. But honestly, I’m open to any project that challenges me and tells a story that needs to be heard.

Lastly, Supacell has been so hugely popular. What are your thoughts on Season 2?

I’m just as excited as the fans are for Season 2! There’s so much more to explore in this world, and I think Season 2 could take things to another level. The first season laid a strong foundation, and there are so many directions the story could go from here. I can’t give away any spoilers, but I’ll just say this: if you thought the first season was intense, you haven’t seen anything yet. I’m ready to dive back in and see where Gabriel’s journey takes him next.
