Review: Ghost at Curve Leicester is a dream

Bill Kenwright’s production of Ghost the Musical at Curve theatre, Leicester captures the heart of the much-loved 1990 film. With Bruce Joel Rubin’s original screenplay adapted for stage, the show beautifully intertwines love, loss, and the supernatural. Featuring a powerful score by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard, alongside heartfelt performances, especially from Rebekah Lowings (Molly) and Josh St Clair (Sam), it stirs deep emotions.

The chemistry between Lowings and St Clair is palpable, especially in iconic scenes like the potter’s wheel. Their portrayal of a love torn apart by tragedy, yet transcending even death, is both tender and heart-wrenching. The song “Unchained Melody,” forever tied to the film is used throughout, but other than that, the musical feels fresh and quite different from the movie.

Jacqui Dubois brings a perfect balance of humour and heart to the role of Oda Mae Brown, providing much-needed comic relief in this grief-heavy narrative. Her standout performance, especially during “Are You a Believer?”, adds depth to the character, and her interactions with Sam inject levity and energy into the plot.

Visually, the production excels. Richard Pinner’s illusions make the supernatural feel real, with Nick Richings’s lighting design adding an ethereal quality to Sam’s ghostly presence. Mark Bailey’s set design, especially the sleek moving panels, captures the essence of a bustling New York backdrop, and works harmoniously with Curve’s vast stage, enhancing the storytelling.

Director Bob Tomson maintains a brisk pace, contrasting the soulful, reflective ballads with scenes of action and tension, ensuring the show keeps the audience captivated. The physical choreography and dynamic staging, especially during Sam’s interactions with the Subway Ghost (Wade Lewin), feel innovative and cinematic.

Ghost the Musical successfully transfers the film’s poignancy to the stage. It’s a production that will tug at your heartstrings, making you laugh, cry, and reflect on the timeless power of love.
