BBC Radio 2 quits ‘X’ with immediate effect

Radio 2 will no longer post on X

The BBC has announced that BBC Radio 2 will no longer “tweet” on ‘X’, the platform previously known as Twitter.

In a suprise announcement today, followers were told “We’re no longer updating this account, but you can still tag @bbcradio2 at any time to contact the studio. Keep up to date with all things Radio 2 by following us on: Instagram – http://instagr.am/bbcradio2 TikTok- http://tiktok.com/@bbcradio2 Listen on@bbcsounds”.

At the same time, BBC 6Music shared the same message with its followers, advising there wouldn’t be any more updates from the station on the platform.

It’s an unusual move, and BBC Radio 1 is thought to be considering its own stance. The station is under pressure to reach younger fans, and rival stations like Capital are making more use of the platform, having recently acquired ‘Celeb Buzz’, now posting as ‘Capital Buzz’.

The news doesn’t affect the presenter’s own social media habits, with Scott Mills, Zoe Ball, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley, Rylan and others still utilising X to reach listeners.

BBC Radio 2 is the UK’s most listened to radio station, with a weekly audience of 13.3 million (RAJAR Q4, 2023).The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show is most listened to Breakfast show in the UK with an audience of 6.6 million (RAJAR Q4, 2023). The network’s presenters include Michael Ball, Zoe Ball, Rob Beckett, Tony Blackburn, OJ Borg, Revd.
