24 million viewers watched England’s defeat in Euros 2024 Final
Almost 24 million viewers watched England’s defeat in the Euros 2024 final against Spain last night.
The massive figure was achieved by the final being broadcast on both BBC One and ITV1 at the same time, and it was also streamed on BBC iPlayer and ITVX. According to Broadcast, a17.8million chose to watch BBC One’s coverage, whilst 6 million were watching ITV1.
Gary Lineker introduced live coverage from Berlin’s Olympiastadion on BBC iPlayer and BBC One from 6:30 pm. He was joined in the studio by Rio Ferdinand and Micah Richards, with special guest Spanish International and Euros winner Juan Mata. Commentary was provided by Alan Shearer and Guy Mowbray. Alex Scott and Kelly Somers were pitchside, soaking up all the atmosphere and anticipation for the historic game.
The Three Lions had fallen behind in each of their three knockout games at that tournament but completed their latest comeback against the Netherlands on Wednesday, thanks to Ollie Watkins’ 90th-minute winner. Gareth Southgate’s side made it through to their first final on foreign soil, vying to make amends for their agonizing defeat to Italy on penalties at Wembley three years earlier.
Opponents Spain were trying to win this tournament for a record fourth time. Luis de la Fuente’s side had won all six of their matches, including victories against international heavyweights France, Germany, Italy, and Croatia. Their semi-final win against the French saw winger Lamine Yamal, who turned 17 the day before the final, become the youngest scorer in European Championship history.
Viewers faced an agonising match which saw the Spanish team take control of the game, whilst the three lions lagged behind. At the climax of a frustrating game, it was Mikel Oyarzabal who sealed the win for Spain in the 86th minute.
The huge ratings came at the end of a big day of sport which also saw this year’s Wimbledon tournament come to an end. Fans have a short wait until 26th July to enjoy the Olympics coverage, which will air on both Eurosport and the BBC.
