In the spring of 1940, the winds of change sweep through Skeldale House, ushering in uncertainty and transformation for all its residents. Meanwhile, Tristan's conspicuous absence weighs heavily on the household, particularly on Siegfried, who endeavors to maintain the growing household's unity in the face of an evolving world.
Amidst this shifting landscape, a blossoming friendship emerges between Mrs. Hall and Helen as they gaze toward the future, seeking solace and strength in each other.
