Jake Shears and Rufus Wainwright confirmed for BBC Proms

News

Renowned singer-songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright, recipient of multiple awards, is set to make a triumphant return to the grand stage of the BBC Proms with an exceptional double-concert event: "Want Symphonic – Want One and Want Two" which will see Jake Shears make his BBC proms debut.

Commemorating two decades since the release of his acclaimed album "Want One," an opus that draws inspiration from a diverse palette spanning opera, cabaret, chanson, and jazz, these performances will stand as premieres on the global stage. These concerts will unveil brand-new orchestral arrangements meticulously crafted for the Proms' unique atmosphere. Adding to the anticipation, Jake Shears will be joining Rufus Wainwright for a duet performance of the song "Old Whore’s Diet."

Reflecting on the collaboration, Rufus Wainwright shares, "My association with Jake goes back to the very beginning of my career. I distinctly remember him handing me the Scissor Sisters' tape, showcasing their early demos, seeking my insights. Little did I know they would soon ascend to unprecedented heights. Jake's musical vision has always captivated me, and I'm genuinely thrilled that we're finally able to harmonize our voices and perform a song that resonates deeply with both of us."

Jake Shears, equally enthusiastic, expresses, "It's truly remarkable that Rufus and I haven't had the chance to properly lend our voices to each other's music until now. But the moment has arrived! I'm excited to share that I'll be uniting with my dear friend Rufus Wainwright at this year's illustrious BBC Proms. Together, we're preparing a duet that we're eagerly looking forward to sharing with all of you."

The live broadcast of the Prom, available on BBC Radio 3 and later on BBC Sounds for a month, will capture the magic of this captivating musical rendezvous.

The 2023 Proms season has treated audiences to a striking array of performances spanning a wide spectrum of genres.
