West Side Story gets its free-to-air tv premiere on Channel 4 tonight (Saturday 11 January 2025) at 9pm.
Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg brings his vision to West Side Story, a reimagining of the classic 1957 tale of love and rivalry in New York City. The screenplay, penned by celebrated writer Tony Kushner, breathes new life into the beloved musical originally choreographed by Jerome Robbins, with an iconic score by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents.
The film stars Ansel Elgort as Tony, a former member of the “Jets” gang, and Rachel Zegler as María, the sister of the “Sharks” gang leader. Their love story unfolds against a backdrop of escalating racial and territorial tensions between the rival gangs, threatening their happiness.
This reimagining introduces breathtaking choreography by Justin Peck, with the film’s score conducted by Gustavo Dudamel of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and arranged by composer David Newman. The cast includes Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, Ana Isabelle, Corey Stoll, Brian d’Arcy James, and Rita Moreno—who starred in the 1961 film adaptation and also serves as an executive producer.
Visually stunning with cinematography by Janusz Kaminski, West Side Story showcases a timeless tale of love and social strife, bringing the iconic musical to a whole new generation.
