Our Tiny Islands starts tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.
There are more than 6000 islands in our United Kingdom, and many of them are absolutely tiny. From exceptional enclaves and secluded sanctuaries to awe-inspiring archipelagos and hidden havens, this series explores the ins and outs of island life and celebrate their unique and breathtaking landscapes. This first episode travels the length of the UK, from remote Fair Isle, between the Orkneys and the Shetlands, via the tiny and uninhabited Cockle Island in Northern Ireland, down to the Isles of Scilly off Cornwall. Gigha in the Inner Hebrides is a harsh but beautiful place to live, and the seas surrounding it are full of life. Tony and Catriona settled there and set themselves up as oyster farmers. Now, they supply the local restaurant and export their oysters far and wide.
The tiny Scottish island of Fair Isle is renowned for its wool and knitted jumpers, and the modern meets the traditional, as French-born Marie works as a fire officer at the tiny airport, and also keeps sheep and knits traditional Fair Isle jumpers. One of the warmest and sunniest parts of the UK lies just off Cornwall: the Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of 140 islands, only five of which are inhabited all year round. On the island of Tresco, the uniquely beautiful, 14-acre Abbey Gardens are home to around 20,000 plants from 80 different countries. Gardeners Kate and Andy are part of a team who look after them, where vegetables sit cheek by jowl with exotic plants.
And on the minute and uninhabited Cockle Island just off the coast of Northern Ireland perches a very important bird refuge, home to a colony of terns. National Trust warden Hugh and volunteer Jim visit regularly to check on the birds, count them and track their movements.
