The highly anticipated spin-off of the BAFTA-winning series Motherland, titled Amandaland, is set to premiere on BBC One and iPlayer this February. The new comedy, produced by Merman, centers on Amanda, played by Lucy Punch, as she embarks on a new chapter in her life.
Lucy Punch reprises her role as Amanda, joined by Joanna Lumley as her mother Felicity, and Philippa Dunne as her devoted friend Anne. New cast members include Samuel Anderson (Gavin & Stacey) as Mal, Siobhan McSweeney (Derry Girls) as Della, Rochenda Sandall (Line of Duty) as Fi, Ekow Quartey (Trying) as JJ, and Peter Serafinowicz (The Gentlemen) as Johannes.
Tanya Qureshi, Head of Comedy at the BBC, expressed her excitement: “We can’t wait for audiences to see Amanda’s new chapter, brought to life by such a talented cast and a wonderfully sharp set of characters. It’s going to be a real treat.”
Sharon Horgan, co-creator of Motherland and co-founder of Merman, shared her enthusiasm: “Saying goodbye to Motherland was genuinely bittersweet, as there’s such fondness for those characters. It’s been a thrill to continue Amanda’s story, along with Anne and Felicity, and to bring in an incredible new cast. Audiences are in for a hilarious look at the next challenges of parenthood and the unique friendships formed at the school gates.”
In Amandaland, Amanda’s life takes a turn as she downsizes and moves to South Harlesden (rebranded by estate agents as “SoHa”), following her divorce. With her children Manus and Georgie now in secondary school, Amanda must navigate the trials of raising teenagers—complete with teenage drinking, fake Instagram accounts, and eco-anxiety. Even Amanda, as confident in her parenting as she is, can’t tackle these challenges on her own.
Her mother, Felicity (Lumley), frequently visits, maintaining a co-dependent relationship filled with backhanded compliments and snarky remarks about Amanda’s new lifestyle. Meanwhile, Amanda’s long-suffering friend Anne (Dunne) is pulled back into her orbit to help Amanda navigate the school’s social scene.
Created by Motherland alums Sharon Horgan, Holly Walsh, Helen Serafinowicz, and Barunka O'Shaughnessy, the show is written by Walsh, Serafinowicz, O'Shaughnessy, and Laurence Rickard (Ghosts, Yonderland). Amandaland promises a fresh and hilarious exploration of modern motherhood and friendships.
