Taron Egerton is Elton John in Dexter Fletcher’s sequins-and-all biopic musical drama. Expect glamour, tantrums and killer piano hooks, alongside Elton’s meteoric rise from shy but extremely talented suburban boy, via his symbiotic collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin (Jamie Bell), to taking Los Angeles by storm and becoming a global star – while also encountering some stumbling blocks along the yellow brick road…
The film was written by Lee Hall, produced by Elton’s husband David Furnish and executive produced by the man himself – so this is the authorised version of the Rocketman’s life. Egerton won a Golden Globe for his spot-on portrayal of Elton, and the film also won enough music and costume awards to bling up a massive mantlepiece.
Also featuring Steven Mackintosh as Elton’s emotionally distant father Stanley, Bryce Dallas Howard as his wayward and distracted mother, Gemma Jones as his doting grandma, Richard Madden as his charismatic lover and manager John Reid, and Stephen Graham as old-school promoter Dick James. And special mention to Matthew Illesley and Kit Connor as all-singing young Reggie, in his Pinner childhood days.
