Meet the Nominees

Simone Biles (USA)
Biles reaffirmed her status as gymnastics’ Greatest of All Time with spectacular performances at the Paris Olympics. Overcoming challenges faced at the Tokyo Games, the 27-year-old won gold in the all-around, team, and vault events, along with a silver on floor. She became the oldest woman to win the all-around Olympic title in 72 years and the first gymnast to secure non-consecutive all-around titles, showcasing her enduring dominance in the sport.

Caitlin Clark (USA)
A rookie sensation in the WNBA, Clark made an immediate impact in her debut season with the Indiana Fever, earning Rookie of the Year honors with 66 of 67 votes. The 22-year-old broke records for points, assists, and three-pointers in a debut season, while also driving a surge in women’s basketball popularity—WNBA attendance rose by 48% during the regular season thanks to her electrifying performances.

Catherine Debrunner (Switzerland)
Debrunner dominated para athletics in Paris, winning five gold medals and one silver at the Paralympic Games. Her victories included the T53 400m, T53 800m, T54 1500m, T54 5000m, and T54 marathon. The 29-year-old also excelled on the marathon circuit, winning London, retaining Berlin, and breaking her own course record in Chicago to claim a second consecutive Abbott World Marathon Majors title.

Armand Duplantis (Sweden)
Duplantis continued to redefine pole vaulting in 2024, defending his Olympic title and breaking his own world record three times. His gold-medal performance in Paris marked him as the first male athlete to retain an Olympic pole vault title since 1956. The Swedish star also clinched victories at the World Indoor Championships, European Championships, and his fourth consecutive Diamond League title.

Sifan Hassan (Netherlands)
Hassan showcased remarkable versatility at the Paris Olympics, winning marathon gold with a sprint finish in record time just 37 hours after claiming 10,000m bronze. She also secured 5,000m bronze, becoming the first athlete in 72 years to medal in all three events at the same Olympics—a feat last achieved by Emil Zatopek in 1952. Her achievements earned her the 2024 World Athletics Female Athlete of the Year award.

Leon Marchand (France)
Competing under immense pressure at his home Olympics, Marchand emerged as the most successful athlete in Paris. The 22-year-old swimmer claimed four gold medals (400m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 200m breaststroke, and 200m individual medley), joining an elite group of swimmers with more than three individual Olympic titles in one Games. His medal count alone would have placed him 20th on the national medal table.
