Travel: Why Stockholm makes for the perfect Autumn break.

Stockholm. A place known for fashion, design, attractive people and herring. What’s not to love?

We flew with Norwegian Air from Gatwick and we couldn’t fault the experience. The in-flight staff were fantastic – informative, friendly, helpful, and the flight itself was comfortable and to time.

On arrival, we took the high-speed Arlanda Express train, which was modern, clean and very quick.  We then made our way to the oldest part of Stockholm, where we checked in at the Collector’s Lord Nelson Hotel.

The maritime-style room had cable TV, free Wi-Fi and was very, very comfortable. The staff were great, the bar was very relaxing and the breakfasts were fantastic.   We enjoyed the roof top terrace and made use of the hotel’s relaxing library too.

The hotel was brilliantly situated, right next to olde worldy book shops, cafes, bakeries and bars.  We did find eating out in Stockholm is extortionate – the cheapest meal out is an omelette or jacket potato which will set you back around £12.50 and at worst, a cup of tea and a biscuit came in at around £7.  The place is by no means cheap, but everything we consumed was good.

There’s so much to do in Stockholm, the best thing to do is purchase a city card. This allows you on to public transport and the dedicated tour busses which will stop off at all of the tourist destinations. And there are many!

A fantastic zoo, an Absolut Vodka museum, the tv tower, the vasa museum, the national museum… you will have no issues filling your days in this beautiful city. The card itself gets you into over 80 museums and attractions, plus discounts for the Imax theatre and boat trips.  We had such a good time, and we’ll be definitely returning to do the rest. We even saw the moomin’s at the magical children’s museum, which is a must or any family.  You can choose from a 48, 72 or 120 hour card and to give you an idea, it’s just £63 approx for a 48 hour pass.

There’s more to see than all of that though – brilliant shopping streets, a stunning palace, river walks, exceptional restaurants and bars… you will not be bored! By night, there's a bar, restaurant, cafe, club to suit everybody's taste and the atmosphere is just great. We cannot recommend Stockholm highly enough, whether you’re looking for a weekend break a full week’s holiday, you’ll love every minute.
