Film Review with Showcase Cinema De Lux: Star Trek Beyond

When I heard there was going to be a third Star Trek movie I can’t say I was that excited; in total contrast to the time when I heard there was going to be a second movie.  The first movie had delivered excitement, fun, emotion and a big bang of new life into the Star Trek movie franchise that I wanted to watch over and over again.  So my expectation level for the second movie was higher than the stars above and boy did it come crashing down.  I’m know I’m not with the majority here (7.8/10.0 IMDB) but I thought the second movie failed to deliver and lost all of the energy and fun of the first movie, being too slow, serious and predictable.  The doubt had set in.  Could Star Trek Beyond burn bright like the first movie or was it going to signal fade into darkness like the second?

"Star Trek Beyond," the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew.  In “Beyond," the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

From the opening scene this movie had my attention, with Chris Pine keeping the movie on course with a charismatic performance as Captain Kirk, supported by his crew, notably Karl Urban as Dr McCoy and Simon Pegg as ‘Scotty’.  The script was livelier, the action crisper and the balance of tension, emotion and entertainment placed well with the storyline.  A good tester for any movie: would I watch it again?  Yes without doubt.  Am I hopeful for a fourth movie – beyond doubt!

Our verdict: phasors set to Stunner! 4 Stars. Book your tickets now.
